Learning the Truth

On the journey of reconciliation, it is important to understand the truth. Learning about the history and colonization of Indigenous Peoples and Residential Schools can be difficult. Please watch, read, participate and learn with care.

About the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) was created from the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA)- an agreement and settlement package intended to compensate survivors for the harms they suffered in residential schools, and to work towards a more just and equitable future for Indigenous peoples.

The TRC spent six years travelling to all parts of Canada and heard from more than 6,500 witnesses creating a historical record of the residential school system. The final report, Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future (2015), documents the tragic experiences of approximately 150,000 Canadian residential school students.

The 6-volume final report includes 94 "calls to action"(or recommendations) to further reconciliation between Canadians and Indigenous Peoples. All Canadians are encouraged to read the summary or the final report to learn more about the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.
